4/7/2014: The Board of Education passed two resolutions which will begin the work on the football field and press box.  You will see equipment being moved into the parking lot by the stadium and work will begin this week to transform our football field!  The gates will be locked except for construction personnel during this renovation. We anticipate both of these projects being completed for the fall seasons of football and soccer. The high school renovations will begin immediately upon the conclusion of this school year. The vocational wing will undergo an asbestos abatement, followed by demolition this spring to make room for our new PreK - 7th grade building.

12/19/2013: Building Update

On December 17, 2013 at their regularly scheduled meeting the Brooklyn Board of Education passed a resolution 5-0 to retain Then Design Architecture, Ltd as the firm to design the new Pk-7 building.  TDA has been on site working with our staff and administrators since the inception of a bond issue based on the building necessity. Prior to this Board meeting November 6, the teachers and staff had a chance to meet with the architects, ask questions, and provide input.  A public meeting had been held in the evening of November 6, 2013 to gain input from the community at large.  The next step will be to advertise, interview, and select a construction manager at risk to work with the design team from TDA and the Board.
Independently of the new construction, plans are underway for renovations to the current high school building, which will include converting the media center into classrooms, upgrades in the auditorium, music wing repairs, and roofing.  Also, changes to the football field turf and pressbox will be bid and completed with cooperating weather this spring and summer.
Stay tuned!

Plans regarding the Building Project are well underway.  Based on the input of staff, residents, parents, and administrators, the architects at TDA have developed preliminary renderings to help paint the picture of what the future of Brooklyn City Schools could entail.

The architects from TDA share the latest updates and provide further details of the renderings shown below during Let's Talk Brooklyn episode.

Below you will find several examples of the new construction as well as evidence of renovations at the high school and athletic fields.  It must be noted that these are preliminary renderings to coordinate space, indicate traffic flow, assess programming needs, and determine access points.  Nothing is finalized at this point.  We are collecting information and feedback from the staff and community.

Athletic Field Proposed Renovations

The football field will be turfed and the pressbox will be replaced.  Both of these renovations will be bid after the first of the year.  It is anticipated that the new field will be finished for the start of the 2014 soccer and football season.

Existing Site Plan

The highlighted areas on the visual below are the existing middle school and the wing of the high school that will be demolished.  The middle school will remain operational for the entire time of the construction of the new Pk-7 building.  The demolition of the high school wing will be scheduled to coincide with the end of this school year.  Once the demolition is completed, the construction will begin.

Mass Model

This is an architectural rendition of blocks of space which provide only a representation of how the necessary components of the construction may fit on the land.  This is not done “to size” and is only used as a model.  It allows the viewer to begin to visualize how the existing high school building and new construction will be positioned on the land.

Proposed Site Plan

This rendering begins to develop 3 distinct entrances and exits for different age groups.  It does not show where barriers will be placed or exact traffic flow, but it does outline possibilities.  It includes possible scenarios for playgrounds and parking.

Classroom Configurations

This rendering begins to show possible classroom configurations for the first and second floors, collaborative spaces such as the media center and project labs, fieldhouse and cafeteria placement, and high school renovations.  We anticipate that the high school renovations will be completed by the start of the 2014-15 school year.  High school programming and classroom/restroom renovations will be necessary due to the demolition of the wing which allows room for the new building.
