In the past, Mrs. Mills usually assigns a brochure for the students' final project after studying Citizenship. This year, due to a BCSD grant, she decided to use our Google Technology/ Chromebooks to make an online project. So, after covering the standards, listed below, the time had come to teach the 4th graders Google Sites! The students did a great job, and the websites came out great!
4th Grade Social Studies Standards:
- Gov. 4. 16 Civic participation requires individuals to make informed and reasoned decisions by accessing and using information effectively.
- Gov. 4. 15 Individuals have a variety of opportunities to participate in and influence their state and national government. Citizens have both rights and responsibilities in Ohio and the United States
- Gov. 4. 18 Laws can protect rights, provide benefits and assign responsibilities.
The unit involved Mrs. Mills modeling for students how to use Google Sites and other skills they needed to be successful webmasters. She wanted them to complete the website project with their new web design skills. According to Mrs. Mills, “We had problems from time to time, but found that students helped other students quicker than I could, so the students became the teacher in no time! I'd love to continue teaching website skills and allow the students to make more. I'd also like to complete a shared website project where each student works on a certain page and then the whole website is completed by a group of students. I plan to make at least one more website before these students leave fourth grade.”
On a final note, the "Word Art" on student homepages are another design that they created themselves. Students designed those at: https://wordart.com. Once created, students then uploaded them to their websites!
