Exciting Kick Off for One School, One Book Program

Willy Wonka Cast

Brooklyn School students participated in a creative and exciting school-wide assembly in the High School Auditorium on Friday, April 26, 2019, to kick-off this year’s One School, One Book program, as well as announce and generate excitement for this year’s book selection, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.  Over the next month, classrooms will be reading and incorporating the children’s literary classic in a wide variety of learning activities.  Thanks to a partnership with Ridge Park Square, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, City of Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library (CCPL), students will receive their very own copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and can participate in a community scavenger hunt at Ridge Park Square!  Representatives from the above community partners were in attendance, including Brooklyn City Council Pro-Tem Andy Celcherts and Council Member Meg Ryan Shockey; Jill Ludwig from the Office of Brooklyn Mayor Katie Gallagher; Shannon Blackwell, President & CEO, and Stacy Perkins, Assistant Property Manager from Ridge Park Square and Zeisler Morgan Properties, ltd.; and Sarah Markovich from the Brooklyn Branch – CCPL.

One School, One Book Activity

Staff and students also participated in a host of fun, themed games inspired by main characters from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  Members of the Brooklyn High School Drama Club delivered a surprise performance on-stage of “The Candy Man” song from their recent production of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka.  In addition, twelve lucky students received a piece of candy for finding a golden ticket underneath their seat.  The Brooklyn City Schools wish to thank all our community partners for generously supporting this year’s One School, One Book program.  Finally, a special thank you to Brooklyn teachers Wendy Smith and Suzy Marquis for their efforts in coordinating the One School, One Book kick-off assembly and activities.
