8th grade student Brianna Slawinski will advance to the Northeast Regional round of the Power of the Pen competition thanks to an impressive showing in the recent District-level competition on Saturday, January 12, 2019, where she earned a first-place finish in two of the three rounds. Participating students are judged based on their ability to compose an original short story from a written prompt in a forty-minute timed format. Now entering its 33rd year, the Power of the Pen competition promotes excellence in creative writing for students at the middle school level. Brianna will represent Brooklyn High School at the Northeast Regional competition on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at Kent State University. Brooklyn High School’s Power of the Pen group features six student members who meet once per week to sharpen their creative writing skills under the guidance of 8th grade ELA/Creative Writing teacher Jacinta Bader. In addition to her involvement with the Power of the Pen group, Brianna participates in the gifted program at Brooklyn High School and is also a member of the Student Council. The Brooklyn City Schools congratulate Brianna on her impressive accomplishment and wish her continued success at the Regional competition in February!
