6th Graders Explore World of STEM Learning Through GE Girls Program

6th graders with GE Instructors

Ten 6th graders at Brooklyn School had the unique opportunity to participate in the first of three STEM-based learning sessions as part of the GE Girls program on Tuesday, January 29, 2019.  The program is designed to encourage girls to explore the world of science, technology, engineering and math.  GE Girls program instructors guided the participating students in several engaging and hands-on learning activities inside the Project Lab.  To explore the difference between monomers and polymers, students created slime in a lab experiment and observed its characteristics.  Students then reflected on the character traits they would possess as a superhero and drew a corresponding picture.  One of the most popular experiments involved the creation of a simple door alarm system using mostly common household materials.  The program concluded with a lesson on female figures who made noteworthy contributions in STEM-based fields, followed by a group discussion on the various experiments conducted throughout the morning.  The GE Girls program will visit Brooklyn School in February and conclude with a culminating visit to Cleveland State University in April that will be attended by students from all participating schools.
