Congratulations to BHS teacher Ms. Kerry Merriman on being named the January Teacher of the Month at Brooklyn High School! Ms. Merriman has been teaching at Brooklyn High School for seven years and was nominated by Principal Bill Wingler for the monthly recognition. As an Intervention Specialist, Ms. Merriman has co-taught several different subjects at the high school and is currently co-teaching 10th and 11th grade English classes. After earning a Bachelor of Arts in English from The Ohio State University, Ms. Merriman worked as a retail manager for several years. Ms. Merriman decided to pursue a long-time desire to enter the teaching profession after being required to work on a Thanksgiving holiday and realizing that her then current job provided no other satisfaction besides a paycheck. Upon being accepted into Cleveland State University, Ms. Merriman decided to pursue a licensure in Special Education and earn a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction for Mild to Moderate Disabilities. The field of Special Education interested her in-part due to several of her own family members struggling with learning disabilities in-school, as well as possessing a strong interest in helping students with special needs. As a teacher in the Brooklyn City Schools, Ms. Merriman enjoys the small-school atmosphere as it provides her the opportunity to work with the same students over several years and watch them grow as a student. The Brooklyn City Schools proudly congratulate Ms. Kerry Merriman on her recognition and express gratitude for her dedication on behalf of our students.
