8th and 9th Grade Students Show Creativity and Resiliency with Online ELA Lessons

ELA Blackout Poem 2

Brianna Slawinski, Grade 9, Original Text The Glass Castle

With the help of technology and the dedicated efforts of ELA/Creative Writing Teacher Jacinta Bader, 8th and 9th grade students are showing both creativity and impressive resilience with the new form of online learning. Students in the Creative Writing class recently fashioned virtual blackout poems by taking a page from a novel found online and creating their own poem by strategically selecting singular words and blacking out the remaining text. During an ongoing independent literature circle novel project, 8th grade ELA students were provided a PDF of the selected text which they can make notes on while following along to the audio of the novel. Using the online learning platform Edpuzzle, Mrs. Bader was able to embed questions throughout the chapters which require students to engage in various levels of critical thinking.  In addition to the above activities, students also participate in weekly ZOOM meetings to engage in small group discussions. Congrats, to all participating students for a job well done! Finally, a special shout-out to Mrs. Bader and all Brooklyn Schools teachers for their hard work and dedication on behalf of students.
