December 28, 2020

Dear Brooklyn Hurricane Families,

Due, in part, to the recent recommendation from Governor DeWine to delay students' return to in-person learning for an additional week after the New Year holiday, the Brooklyn City School District is revising our learning calendar after Winter Break. The additional remote learning days immediately following Winter Break are intended to create an additional buffer between unintended exposures from the holidays so that we can safely transition our students back to in-person learning as appropriately as possible. Please see the revised learning calendar below:

Chagrin Valley Conference Winter Athletics -The Chagrin Valley Conference will resume league-wide competition starting the week of January 4. All athletics and extracurricular activities can continue throughout the week of 1/4/21. Staff and students will continue to follow previously established safety and mitigation procedures during all practices and contests.

Remote Only Learning Students - For parents that have committed their student to remote learning for the semester, you need to do nothing at this time. Your student will continue to receive their instruction in the remote learning model throughout the remainder of the first semester. The start of the 2nd semester is Monday, January 25, 2021. If you wish for your student to continue on our Remote Learning platform for the 2nd semester, please make sure to complete the commitment survey that was sent out in November. Specific questions should be directed to your child’s building principal.

It is important to note, for the second week in a row, that the county’s health data continues to move in a positive direction. Our goal of making decisions in smaller increments is to allow for as much in-person learning as possible and to aid our ability to quickly adjust to the ever-changing health conditions in our area. While the district continues to closely monitor the county health data, we ask our families to review all COVID-19 prevention strategies during this busy holiday season. As always, we ask parents to have a contingency plan in place should health conditions cause the school district to suddenly shift to remote learning.

If you have any questions, please contact me directly at ted.caleris@bcshurricanes.org.

Best Regards,

Dr. Theodore Caleris
Superintendent/CEO
