The Brooklyn City Schools are home to caring and dedicated staff members who make a positive impact on our students every day. To recognize their contributions, the District will be spotlighting individual teachers and staff on a regular basis. Please read the article below to learn more about a member of our Hurricane Staff Family!
For the past twenty-three years, Mary Ellen Sefchik has been an encouraging and positive influence in the lives of countless students in the Brooklyn City Schools. During that time, Mrs. Sefchik has served in a variety of roles, beginning in 1998 as cafeteria staff member. In 2003, she made a transition to the Transportation Department as a bus monitor and substitute driver, before taking a full-time driver position in 2008. In addition to arrival and dismissal duties, Mrs. Sefchik also provided transportation for athletic events and greatly enjoyed the opportunity to watch and cheer on all of the students at each game. A new chapter began in 2018 with the closing of the district’s bus service, as Mary Ellen started her current position as a playground monitor. Mrs. Sefchik maintains a visible presence at athletic events, as she has served as a Brooklyn Volleyball line judge for the past fifteen years and currently performs scorebook duties for all of the Brooklyn basketball teams. When asked about her favorite part of working for the Brooklyn City Schools, Mary Ellen shared that she absolutely loves being with the students and supporting them. A lifelong resident of Brooklyn and graduate of Brooklyn High School, Mary Ellen has been happily married to her husband, Ray, for the past 39 years. Together, they enjoy spending time with their family, which includes their one-and-a-half-year-old granddaughter. During her free time, Mrs. Sefchik also loves to golf and complete jigsaw puzzles. The Brooklyn City Schools proudly salute Mary Ellen Sefchik for being an exemplary member of the Hurricane Family and supporting our students!
