Brooklyn School Students Awarded Excellence in Education Award

Brooklyn City Schools Logo

A big congratulations to Brooklyn Preschool students Amran Mengasha and Joseph Madison who were recognized as recipients of the 2021 Excellence in Education Award! The annual recognition is granted by the Education Service Center (ESC) of Northeast Ohio and State Support Team – Region 3 to students with disabilities, peers, and educators as a way to celebrate the many great accomplishments and experiences that occur in special education in Northeast Ohio.

Amran Mengasha

Amran Mengasha was the recipient of the Outstanding Student Achievement Award which acknowledges achievements of school-age children and youth with disabilities in Northeast Ohio. Amran is a persistent and inquisitive student which has enabled her to develop positive relationships with her peers and teachers. She readily participates in learning opportunities throughout her day, including music and movement, pre-academic tasks, and group social games. While she does not yet have the verbal skills to sing along to the music, she has displayed a strong sense of determination by finding a way to participate through movement.  Amran also models how to appropriately use various assistive technologies such as the core board and picture schedule. One of her most recent learning milestones has been the completion of a four-step transition with a picture schedule with minimal teacher assistance. Altogether, Amran is a wonderful example for her peers by displaying skills and attitudes that support personal growth.

Joseph Madison

As the recipient of the Outstanding Peer Achievement Award, Joseph Madison is a student without disabilities who has served as an outstanding role model by establishing positive relationships with and assisting other students with special needs. Joseph demonstrates empathy and a caring personality, as he is constantly initiating and engaging in meaningful conversations with both teachers and peers. He can be seen applying Conscious Discipline techniques on a daily basis, such as checking on fellow peers when they are upset or injured. A shy student at the start of school year, Joseph has grown to become a leader of the classroom who makes everyone feel welcome and cared for.

On behalf of the Brooklyn City Schools, congratulations to Amran Mengasha and Joseph Madison on their respective awards and for setting a positive example!
