October 1, 2021

Dear BCS Students, Families, Faculty, and Staff,

I write today to update our school community on the progress we have made over the past year.  As part of a strategic effort to ensure that facilities are properly maintained and upgraded, the Brooklyn City Schools are in the process of completing a wide range of capital improvement projects throughout the entire district campus. These much-needed improvements are only the first step in the district’s commitment to maintain and upgrade the physical infrastructure of the district.

Additionally, the Brooklyn City Schools will be commissioning a Facility Study this fall to be conducted by GPD Architecture Group to assess the overall facility needs of the district. The results of the facility assessment will be presented to the Board of Education later this fall, along with an update on future capital improvement projects. Altogether, the ongoing improvements and maintenance across the campus of the Brooklyn City Schools represents the district’s commitment to providing a learning environment that is safe and gives students opportunities to succeed!

To facilitate the district's strategic planning process and continue the work started last year with the creation of our Portrait of a Hurricane, I want to take this opportunity to invite parents and community members to be a part of the district’s strategic planning committee. Anyone with interest to serve on this committee can contact me directly at ted.caleris@bcshurricanes.org. The input and support of all district stakeholders is greatly valued and will play an important role as the Brooklyn City Schools plans for the future.

Our intent in the coming year is to prioritize district goals and action steps, develop a strategic plan to execute, and put a communication plan in place to share our progress with the school community. The strategic plan will provide a strong foundation to meet the future learning needs of our students and continue the tradition, pride, and excellence of the Brooklyn City Schools.

Thank you again for all you do to support the district’s commitment to students!

Sincerely,

Dr. Theodore Caleris
Superintendent
Brooklyn City Schools
