Brooklyn High School’s First Ring student leaders had the special opportunity to meet and listen to keynote remarks delivered by Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Warren Moon on the campus of Columbus State University on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, in Columbus. The remarks were part of a seminar to support leadership, advocacy, and research that was attended by representatives from the fourteen schools comprising the First Ring Student Leadership Institute along with students from twenty Central Ohio Schools that comprise The Ohio State Student Leadership Research Collaborative.

In his remarks, Warren Moon used examples from his own life story during which he overcame adversity to become the only African American quarterback in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, as well as the only player in league history to be enshrined in Canton, OH and in the Canadian Football League Hall of Fame. He also emphasized the importance of leadership qualities including perseverance, empathy, accountability, responsibility, and integrity, and encouraged students to “put the work in” and “have faith” in themselves as they pursue their individual goals.

Brooklyn sophomores Mayhem Crowley, Jackson Diller, Tyler Morgan, Santana Sammons, and Idajia Simpson also participated in a breakout session with program leaders from Cleveland State University during which they worked on formulating recommendations for change in schools based on data collected from student surveys. Afterwards, students gained feedback and worked alongside Central Ohio student leaders who are also addressing change in their respective high schools. The First Ring Student Leadership Institute will hold a culminating event in May 2022, as each school’s team will present their findings and proposed solutions before an audience featuring First Ring Superintendents, High School Principals, and fellow peers.

Congratulations to Brooklyn’s First Ring Student Leaders for their proud example and commitment to achieving positive change in their school!
