The Brooklyn City Schools proudly congratulates 8th grader Malak Chafki and 7th grader Grace Paul on qualifying for the Power of the Pen State Competition which will take place at Otterbein College in Westerville, OH, on May 12th-13th. During the competition, Malak and Grace will compete against other Ohio student qualifiers in their grade level. The Power of the Pen competition is an interscholastic creative writing program for Middle Schools and features three extemporaneous rounds of writing during which students are asked to write a response to an open-ended prompt. State qualifiers will have the opportunity to meet award-winning author of middle grade and young adult novels, and former Power of the Pen participant, Jasmine Warga.

Grace and Malak advanced from the Regional Competition, which was held remotely at Brooklyn School on Saturday, March 12th. The six regional qualifiers from Brooklyn (three each from 7th and 8th grade) were the most to ever qualify in school history. The Power of the Pen is advised by Brooklyn School Gifted Intervention Specialist (Grades 3-7), Kathleen Mack. Participating students meet for forty-five minutes after-school every Thursday for practice during which they target specific writing skills, and then work on a writing prompt the following week. Congratulations once again to state qualifiers Malak Chafki and Grace Paul, and best wishes at the Power of the Pen state competition!
