Brooklyn High School students from of Brooklyn Intervention Specialist Julie McGarey’s classroom had the unforgettable experience of participating in a mock Board Meeting outside the Board of Education offices on Friday, May 20th. The real-world learning activity provided students the opportunity to learn about and experience the various functions and procedures of a Board of Education meeting. Brooklyn City Schools Board of Education Vice President Rocky Neale and Member Rob Slattery, along with District Treasurer Colleen Aholt participated in the mock Board Meeting. The simulated activity was an amazing learning experience for students, staff, and Board Members. Most importantly, the experience provided students the opportunity to practice empowerment and self-advocacy. Thank you to Mr. Neale, Mr. Slattery, and Mrs. Aholt for their support and serving as positive role models for our youth. A special thank you to Director of Pupil Services, Paula Jones, Mrs. McGarey, and Classroom Assistants Leah Bierman, Mel Vukmire and Barb Kuharik for their efforts to provide this impactful learning opportunity for our students!
