As a prime example of the District’s commitment to providing students high quality and authentic learning opportunities, Brooklyn High School has introduced several new courses for the 2019-2020 school year, including a Journalism class. Approximately twenty-five students signed up for the year-long elective course taught by English Language Arts (ELA) teacher Jon Holko. Throughout the year, students will learn essential skills related to the field of journalism such as writing for various types of news media formats and interviewing, utilizing a curriculum based on Ohio’s ELA content standards. Participating students will not only learn about the field of journalism but also demonstrate their understanding through the creation of an online newspaper that will be published on the District’s website and distributed to seventeen inner-ring school districts in Northeast Ohio! The publication is scheduled to debut during the middle of October and will emphasize factual reporting of district-wide news and events, with the eventual goal of branching out to provide news coverage of community events. Students have been focused on writing the inaugural issue and began their first round of interviews with students and staff at the recent All-District Pep Rally on Friday, September 13, 2019. Excitement is running high for students in the Journalism class as they eagerly anticipate the launch of their very own publication. Stay tuned for future updates on the forthcoming student-produced online newspaper.
